California's Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board is set to act on an ongoing health investigation involving the "flavor manufacturing" industry.
The investigation has uncovered at least eight cases in which workers exposed to the chemical "diacetyl," used as an artificial butter flavoring agent in various popcorn brands, have suffered grave lung problems.
All of the eight have lost most of their lung capacity, with at least one on the lung transplantation list. An emergency order is being requested banning the use of the chemical.
