In a press release devoted mainly to the arrest of a Monterey County drywall employer accused of employing uninsured workers for years, the California Department of Insurance made another startling revelation:
Of the 800,000 employers in the state, 30% of them don't have workers' compensation insurance.
While the statement didn't actually specify that this 30% figure represented illegally uninsured employers - it simply stated that 30% of California's employers "do not have workers' compensation insurance" - the fact that the statement was included in the same press release that described the alleged criminal conduct of an uninsured employer at least made it appear that such was the case.
[And use of the term "employers" - rather than "companies" - in the statement pretty much rules out another common, innocent reason for a company not having workers comp. coverage: No employees - since, obviously, "employers" employ employees by definition (unless of course you're in the roofing business in which case you need workers' comp. insurance even without employees, see our previous article on this subject).]
