Tien S. Nguyen, was sworn in as a Workers' Compensation Administrative Law Judge this past Friday at the Anaheim Board. That makes him the first ever Vietnamese WCJ in California.
"We're very excited about having Judge Nguyen on board, not only as a highly qualified judge, but also to help us further our outreach to the large Vietnamese community in Orange County and other areas throughout the state," said DWC Administrative Director Carrie Nevans.
Judge Nguyen comes to the Anaheim district office after more than 15 years of experience with the State Compensation Insurance Fund legal departments in both Cerritos and Santa Ana. He began his career as staff counsel with SCIF's Cerritos legal department in 1992, transferring to its Santa Ana legal unit in 1999, where he was promoted and continued to provide specialized legal advice to SCIF until joining the DWC in Anaheim.
A native of Vietnam, Nguyen came to the United States as a foreign exchange student during the 1970s.
"We've greatly increased our outreach to injured workers in underserved communities over the past two years," said Nevans. "Judge Nguyen's background will further our efforts to reach Vietnamese-speaking workers throughout California."
Nguyen is an alumnus of the Western State University College of Law, class of 1990. In addition, he holds dual bachelor's degrees from Cal Poly Pomona in Political Science and Electrical Engineering.
Judge Nguyen currently resides in Orange County with his wife and three children.
