Abuse of Family Leave Act May Mean Changes

Apparently, companies have been complaining to the Department of Labor that workers are abusing the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act.

The Act originally granted employees of large companies up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for such things as caring for a baby or family member or taking care of a serious health problem. Congress voted this year to expand it to include up to 6 months leave for military service families for "any qualifying exigency."

Rumor has it that the new proposed regs include, among other things, tightening up the definition of "qualifying exigency."
