Changes in Family Leave Act Signed Into Law
As we reported last week, changes to the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) regarding military service members were recently made.
On January 28th President Bush signed them into law as part of HR 4986 (specifically, section 585).
The two main changes made:
Up to 26 weeks of leave, on a one-time basis, to care for a military service member injured during active duty and
Up to 12 weeks off each year (just like other provisions of the FMLA which remain intact) for a "qualifying exigency" involving a service member being called to active duty.
Yet to be determined by the Department of Labor is exactly what constitutes a "qualifying exigency."
