Superior Ct:   Jury Clears SCIF of Unfair
Dealing Against Brokers

After more than a month of testimony, a San Bernardino County jury has issued a defense verdict in favor of State Compensation Insurance Fund in the long-awaited trial involving 140 brokers who sued the company for unfair practices.

At issue was whether the procedures that SCIF used when it terminated the "preferred" status of the brokers were fair.

The case -- Cumbre Inc. v. SCIF -- has already been up once on appeal to get it to trial. The trial was led by the main plaintiff, Cumbre Inc., an insurance brokerage firm which lost over a million dollars in commissions in the two years following State Fund's actions.

The jury came back within hours of starting deliberations, ruling that SCIF did nothing wrong when, and how, it terminated the brokers.
