State Workers Authorize Strike!

We reported last week that one of the largest state unions -- the Service Employees International Local 1000 -- sent ballots to its members asking them to authorize leaders to call a statewide strike if circumstances warranted.

On Saturday, its members voted overwhelmingly (3 to 1 in favor) to authorize such a strike.

The union represents some 95,000 state workers including DMV staff and the majority of State Compensation Insurance Fund employees.

While there is no immediate call for a strike, the vote adds considerable leverage to the ongoing battle between the Governor and the workers over Schwarzenegger's 3-day a month furlough orders, as well as ongoing negotiations over how to work out details of the just-passed state budget.
