Ledbetter Bill, Expanding Deadline for Filing Pay Equity
Suits, First Bill Signed by Obama

In 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Lilly Ledbetter, who for decades had worked for Goodyear Tires at what she ultimately determined were wages far below her male counterparts, had waited too long to file her gender discrimination lawsuit.

The Court ruled that the federal 180-day limit for filing such a claim begins to run when the person is first hired, not when an allegedly-lower paycheck is paid.

Well, that is no longer the law.

As the very first bill he signed into law as president, President Obama signed what has been dubbed the Lilly Ledbetter Pay Equity Bill - formally known as Public Law 111-2.

It effectively negates the Supreme Court decision by mandating that the 180-day limitations period only begins to run when each paycheck is paid, thereby giving an employee six months to file from the last paycheck he or she receives.
